#1 Neighborhood Hero!

I'm trying the "taper down" method of quitting tobacco use.  This is about my 7 attempt and everything seems to be headed in the right direction.  I am using less, so that is a start.  Anyhow, my mind was wandering this morning and I was thinking about when I started chewing.  Back in those days, a can of chew cost .10 cents and you could walk into the drug store and just buy it.  "Happy Days" was what we started with.  Seemed logical with a name like "Happy Days".

Now, keep in mind.  At this point in time, it wasn't a habit.  It was a couple of idiot kids being mischievous.  We would take a dip and sit around and see who could make the biggest spit ring.  And honestly, the stuff tasted horrible but we convinced ourselves that this was "man shit".  In fact, one of my friends fathers chewed, so that further solidified the fact that this was indeed "man shit".

I managed to try to sneak some chew at one of my little league games.  I took a small pinch and out of nowhere.... it was picture night.  I had to stand in line, not spit and naturally that made me loopy.  I ended up puking and missing the game.  Somehow, I didn't learn.

About this time, one of my neighborhood hero's moved in next door.  Jim Coble!  The day they moved in, there were a few of us playing catch in the street with a baseball.  Jim walks up, introduces himself as the new guy in the neighborhood and let us know that he loves to play catch.  Turns out, Jim was a minor league catcher.  His plan was to be in Vegas until real early spring, then go play ball in Georgia and then come back after the season.

How Jim became my hero was, he would purposely have me throw him short hops, in the street.  Not on a raked infield where a short hop is predictable... right in the middle of the damned road.  And he wanted them as hard as I could throw.  At 12-13 years old, I could go full blast all day, so he got the practice he needed and I had a guy to throw balls at.

While playing catch, he would give me all kinds of pointers.  We'd do quick release drills so I could the ball across the diamond from third to first quicker.  One day we were at the school with a few other neighborhood kids I recruited so Jim could practice "run downs".  No better way to practice rundowns than chasing a bunch of fast teenagers.

Out of nowhere, Jim takes a chew.  He told us that he'd beat the shit out of us if he caught us chewing.  We kept doing drills and I began to think that I didn't want to get killed by this guy.  Nonetheless, he managed to catch me chewing one day when he got home from work.  He made me try Copenhagen, which he knew was going to make me puke.  I tried... I puked and quit chewing for a couple of years.

So playing catch with a minor league guy was the first part of Jim being a hero, and him making me puke was another part, but there was 1 other thing that made this guy bigger than life to me.  He and I were playing catch.  My mother hadn't come home from work yet but shortly after she arrived some whacko drove by and said something that pissed Jim off.  Jim tells the guy to get lost or he'd get his ass kicked.

As the guy approached the corner, he hopped out, called Jim a pussy and hopped back into his truck to leave.  Jim takes off towards the guy.  Since Jim worked at a lumber yard, he had a tape measure on him..... the guy peels out and tries to make it around the corner but Jim throws his tape measure at the truck.  It went completely through the shell and managed to break the back window of the truck.

It was a "super human" feat of strength!  I remember the belt clip on the tape measure whistling as it left his hand.....  As it turns out, we never saw the guy again, and Jim was down "one good tape measure".  Jim was the type of guy who would do anything for anybody and I learned a lot of stuff from him.

Jim was a neighborhood hero!

Neighborhood hero's and neighborhood zero's

Hey everyone, thanks for hanging around.  I'm going to be working on some stuff about my old neighborhood and the good old days.  Stick around if you're interested, and I should have something new up Saturday or so.

I've got issues....

On my daily commute, I have a lot of time to myself these days.  Perhaps too much.  I often find myself rationalizing the irrational and somehow making sense of it all. Hopefully it's just me that does this.  It seems as if there has to be a better use of ones time.

The one thing I tried to digest tonight on the ride home is, being in a cafe or whatever and finding a hair in your food!  Yeah.... kind of gross, but I got to thinking about it.  Imagine sitting down, ordering and when you meal comes out, there is a nice 6 inch long hair across the top of your chicken fried steak???  Right?  The skin kind of crawls, but what happens next is critical.  You can throw a fit and be a real dick to the waitress!  Complain, bitch and moan the whole time and we know what that gets you... they go ahead and remake your chicken fried steak, but everyone in the kitchen licks it, they throw it on the floor and play kitchen hockey with it... it eventually finds someones  genitals.... then its brushed off, deep fried, then served.

   (Houston, we have a problem.)

I came to this conclusion.  If you were a good person, completely polite during the seating and ordering process and eventually find a hair in your food.... it was most likely a total mistake.  Shit happens, and we now know if you act like a dick, your food will be purposely messed with.

So here's the key.... if you find a hair in your food, you have to determine length.  After length comes hair color, and it may be a hair from your server which is obviously accidental.  You are potentially a "tipping" customer and tips is where they make a living-so if you were cool, think of it as a mistake.  Remain cool and it gets taken care of professionally.

BUT!!!!!  If you were a jerk off, and it was a short kinky hair....?  Yeah, you might have had that coming.

But for the new me.  The "Zen Buddhist Redneck Me"... I remain completely calm. I enjoy the pleasant aroma for a chicken fried steak with gravy.  I admire the prowess of the chef who arranged the vegetables in the most appealing way and the placement of the parsley garnish and don't say a word.  Nope, I don't say a thing.  Yeah, the hair looks like a pube, but it could have been a whole "dick and balls combo platter" and ain't nobody got time for that!

I also analyzed the subject from this stand point.  The USDA or FDA feel that a certain amount of bugs, bug parts, and rat shit is acceptable in our food.  All of a sudden, a human hair seems almost appetizing.  Pass the Tabasco, please.

Boner Apetit, fuckers!

Finding the receiving end of a taser....

This is a subject that I enjoy talking about.  A lot of people are against the police and sheriff's departments use and possession of tasers.  At the time, I had no real opinion of the use of them.  Everyone wants less lethal, and its obvious that a taser is potentially a lot less lethal than a .40 caliber slug to center mass.  But with that, there have been some deaths that people try to attach to the use of a taser.

As the story goes, I was taking a course for my concealed weapons permit.  This course covered a lot of ground but was based mostly on being able to protect yourself, safe gun ownership and handling as well as safe operation of a hand gun.  Some of what was covered was "less lethal" alternatives in regards to personal/home defense.

We had multiple instructors that were all involved in various factions of law enforcement, and the majority of them were people I knew personally.  I considered these people friends and still do today and question my sanity when I say that.

One of the first things we went over were "hand to hand combat techniques".  I took a lot of self defense as a kid and learned a lot more through my years in the bar business so I figured I'd be proficient in this field.  Some of the techniques were new to me, so I felt good about the money I spent for the course.  (The one field I thought I "knew it all" actually provided me with a few new tools for my repertoire.)

The next "less lethal" alternative we went over was O.C spray.  Bear spray or pepper spray is the same thing.  So the instructor, who was a friend of mine had the entire class step outside in the fresh early fall air to give us a little dose of the stuff.  There I am standing on the end of the horse shoe shaped line, arms folded, minding my own business listening to a friend who was going to gas my sorry ass, thinking about the fact that I basically paid for this.  (This is the type of shit that is funny to me.)  So as this cop friend of mine gives his speech on the subject, he pulls out his can of O.C. spray, gives it a thorough shake and commences to spray the surrounding crowd.  People start hacking, coughing and complaining about the "burn".  The instructor himself got caught in the cross wind and was having a rough go with the stuff, but another guy and myself on the end are just watching everyone and laughing about it.  Guess what?  Wrong move....  he and I took a direct shot of the shit and I can tell you first hand that getting gassed was one of the worst physical experiences of my life.  (Right under getting my pecker caught in my pants zipper as a kid.)  Now I am laughing, coughing and completely blinded.  I have snot dripping out of my nose by about a foot and all I can hear is the other guy complaining.  In the mean time, the others made their way inside to get cleaned up a bit and a few of them came out to get me and the other guy.  I guess we were put on simmer for a few minutes.  Point well taken, Mr. John.

We gathered back inside the classroom and talked about the experience and discussed the practical application of this tool in our home/personal protection bag of tricks.  I recommend the products use.  It is effective.  As the conversation closed we were told that we would go over the use of a taser during the next class.  We were also told that someone would be "riding the lightning".  As usual, I laughed it off.

Unbeknownst to me, the taser instructor was a friend of mine.  The guy who got me into the class was a good friend of mine who took it upon himself to offer me and my body up to science since nobody else stepped up. I didn't know this until the day before the class.  And its like this.... how do you prepare for something that you know very little about?  Well, you don't but your anxiety goes to work pretty quick.  Now... me being the over achiever I often try to be, I show up for class about 20 minutes early.  As I am standing outside the classroom, here comes my buddy who is going to sometime in the next 2 hours is going to shock the ever loving shit out of me.  "Ready to ride the lightening!" he says with great enthusiasm.  "Yeah, I guess I am."  I replied wondering what in the hell I was doing.

This deputy goes about explaining what is going to happen and told me that I would want to wear a different shirt.  I was wearing a nice work shirt and the taser was going to fire 2 barbs (like fish hooks) into the shirt and my back and it would probably ruin the shirt.  I expressed the fact that I didn't have an extra shirt almost hoping that he'd ride the lightening for me, but I was almost psyched up to give it a go.  Sensing that, he said he could "hook me up to banana clips, but the problem with those is that they traditionally leave a good burn or blisters". At this point, I am getting fired up.  "I don't care about a little burn of blister." I said with a bit of enthusiasm.  "How long you want to ride it for?" he says.  He told me that he and my other friend rode it for a few seconds, so I wanted to up the ante and go for the full 5 second burst.  (That was a dumb ass idea but I was going to go though with it anyhow.)

Ben gives me a good pep talk doing his best to play the situation down.  "It's not that bad" he says, but in the mean time I am replaying COPS episodes through my head, watching dudes a lot bigger than me getting tased and eating shit.....  We open the classroom, I take a seat and the group starts to assemble.  Another cop that I didn't know so well gave me "props" for stepping up, so again I am feeling a little better about the thing.

No sooner do we have the last ass in a seat, Ben says "Come on up Brice".  Panic sets it.  I'm thinking "isn't there some kind of a lead in, an introduction, something else that needs to be said before you electrocute me and make me shit my pants in front of everyone.''  Turns out, there wasn't.  Ben grabs me by the shoulders and turns me so I am facing the crowd.  He explains that the barbs that normally fire from the taser would ruin my shirt so he is hooking me up to the banana clips.  Someone in the group asks, "whats the difference?".  "He's liable to have a couple of burn blisters compared to a couple of small holes in his back and shirt."

I scan the crowd.  A psychiatrist that I had been partnered up with is kind of laughing, shaking his head.  A woman is asking "why are we doing this" and I can't tell you that I wasn't asking the same question.  All of the "tough guys" are looking at me like I was crazy.  All I can think about is how much am I going to shit my pants.....   Ben asks one of the bigger guys in class to come up and grab one of my arms and another cop grabs the other.  Apparently this was to save my beautiful face....  Ben says, "On 3, 2, 1....." and the fucking thing happens!  Through the tightest gritted teeth I scream "FUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCK".  It felt like Tommy Lee from Motley Crue was using ball peen hammers to do a drum solo on the back of my head.  It stops....  I realize that the pain is gone.  I also realize that I did not shit my pants, much to my relief.  Ironically, something so painful, something I had no control over was over and I had no ill affects!

Ben asks, "Are you all right?"  I sat up on my knees and nodded, not because I couldn't speak but because I didn't think anything else needed to be said.  I managed to say "Yeah" and then the tough guys wanted to give it a go.  Yeah sure!  Put the old fat fucker up there, and if he doesn't die I'll give a whack at it.....

The deal is, when it is over, its over.  I could have done push ups, ran around the room, did jumping jacks.  It was over, done!  And with this knowledge of this product, I completely endorse its use.  As well, if you ever think about giving it a go, do it.  It's enlightening, we'll say.  It does give you a perspective that you would not have unless you underwent a tasing.

Am I going to do it again?  Not only no, but fuck no!  I spent a life time keeping my ass out of the position of having this happen.  Been there and done that!  Knock that shit off the bucket list.  Maybe I'll try a sodoku or something.

Oakland Raiders Fans....

Okay Oakland Raiders fans, I am compelled to ask this simple question.  It's a serious question that I really need an answer for to get some kind of understanding about you people.  Here we go.... If you're so fucking smart, how come you're so fucking stupid?

Did your head take a shit and displace your brain?  I mean, something happened to you and I'd like to know what it is that makes you say other teams suck when the Raiders went 4-12 this year.  Are you aware that if any team in the league went 5-11, they are statistically better than the Raiders?  Teams that went 11-5 and 12-4 are leaps and bounds better than the Raiders, but you fucking idiots don't seem to get it.

In all fairness, other fans do it too but Raider fans do it all of the time.  It's like the numbers lie to you or you don't remember "greater than/less than" from first grade!  There were 2 teams that lost more than the Raiders this year.  The Texans went 2-14 nd the Redskins went 3-13 this year.  In all fairness you would be allowed to say that the Texans and the Redskins suck more than the Raiders this year.  You could say that with integrity, even.

4 other teams in the league sucked as much as the Raiders.  Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Cleveland all had the same shitty record as the Raiders, so you could say... again with integrity that the Raiders sucked as much as those teams did.  And if I am not mistaken, that leaves 25 other teams including perennial shitty teams like the Dolphins, Bills and Rams that all played better than the Raiders.

I'm a Saints fan and have been for as long as I can remember.  At least 40 years....  I understand shitty and there is no polishing that turd of a life time record.  It is what it is.  But for the life of me, I can figure out how a Raiders fan can say something like  "the Bears suck" when all records prove otherwise.

Now, I know a couple of Raider fans personally.  Frankly, a few of them are not the brightest people I know so I won't judge all Raider fans using that criteria.... but what is it that makes you folks so fucking stupid?  Can I get an answer to that or do you want me to assume that you're mildly dumber than pigeon shit?  You tell me.

January Hate Things????

I don't know if I am up for doing this all month but I just ran across something that I can't stand.  There are a few local pages on a social networking site where people can offer their goods or maybe even ask questions, okay?  So if you're selling jeans or you need to find out who is a good mechanic, you can do that here.

This lady asks, and I quote, "Does anybody know a good OB Doctor in the valley?"

Did you read the question?  Does it sound like a lady is asking for an OB Doctor?  Specialist, lady parts... baby delivering doctor if I'm not mistaken.... (I'm no doctor, so I don't know.)  There were 3 answers and not a single fucking one of them was an OB Doctor.

Am I the only guy pissed off with this?  That is like asking the question, "whats up" and getting the answer, "fine". It's like, 'are you answering the guy in your head?".

Multiple choice question coming up....

"Does anyone know a good OB Doctor in the Valley?".
 A.  This Dr, and that Dr. are nice people.
 B.  Dr. Abbott is great with children....  (guess you have to get them here first...NUMB NUTS!)
 C.  There is a dentist up on the corner.

You have to choose one of them.  Those were the answers provided.  Can I do you a favor and straighten this out before you blow and o-ring?
A.  (Means the person is stupid.....)
B  Either has no vagina or is fucking stupid
C.  Just go to the dentist and freak the whole office out with your issue.

How in the hell do we have a complete communication break down like this?  The question is simple, people.  I can hear us dumbing our asses into extinction.  We will not last long with this shit in the gene pool. And you know the best thing about this whole situation?  Since this was on a popular social networking site, people who answered the question had their names and photo's up so you can see where this shit is coming from.

I shit you not!  I am sure that the adults that answered those questions are so stupid that they have to be reminded to take their pants off before they poop!  One of these people had an alternative spelling for a relatively common name.  If you've read any of my stuff, you know I am not okay with that.  Now that I think of it, maybe it isn't an alternative name.... maybe this is white folks making shit up again!  "Keeirah" was the name.... anybody ever seen that before?  You're more likely to see a meth head hump a razor blade before you'll ever see that shit before.... and don't you God Damned try to tell me its a family name!!!!  Hazel and Frieda are family names, god damn it.

It's 2014 people... please get smarter... just a little??????

Reflecting on 2013

I welcomed the New Year with my wife.  We spent a lot of the night talking and laughing which is pretty much what we do anyhow.  We only briefly discussed the year of 2013 and concluded that it was a pretty good year.

I woke up this morning and looked at some of the social media sites and I saw a lot of people I know that apparently had a bad 2013.  I understand having a bad day now and then, but a whole year?  Man, I guess that is what drives a lot of people to drink on New Years Eve, eh?

Anyhow, I used to have "bad years".  I learned that that was mostly my fault.  Something unfavorable would happen and I would dwell upon it for days, sometimes even weeks.  These were things that I mostly had no control over but accepted them as personal attacks on me....  I don't understand it, but that is how things used to work for me.

Now, I look back at those bad days, weeks or years and realize that nothing was really as bad as I thought it was.  Its a matter of perception.  I had to learn to "remove myself" from situations that had really nothing to do with me.  I had to learn that I could choose how I acted or reacted in situations like this.  It took a while, but I figured it out.

I had a couple of friends die in 2013.  If they were to come to me right now and say they had a shitty year, I'd buy that all day long and twice on Sunday.  They died for hell's sake!  It doesn't get any worse than that!  In comparison to that, my 2013 was fucking brilliant!  I had a couple of rough days.  I had a few days where some things didn't work out the way they should have.  But to give each one of those "bad days" the power to label a whole year as shitty is crazy.

I'm alive!  I've got my family, friends, a good job, a roof over my head.  Nothing wrong with any of that.  I walk away from 2013 a better man.  I learned a lot about myself and am a stronger and better man for it.  I welcome 2014 with open arms.  I'm alive man, and I am going to live the shit out of this year!  I am going to learn more, do more, love more.  I'm going to listen better, try harder, and help out more often.  I'm going to do new things, do more of my favorite things and have more life experiences.  I am also going to expect less.  I understand that I control most of what happens in my life and I know I am strong and smart enough to work around or through the things that I have no control over.  You can have that too and I'd be more than happy to help you find the way.

I wish all of you a Happy 2014!  Do everybody right and you'll be done right in return.  Take shit a lot less serious.  Relax and live a little.  Notice something new every day.
